This is the best $9 bucks you’ll spend on a book to help you be more creative, think big and go beyond the expected. It’s extremely accessible bits of wisdom and insightful observations, written with a degree of clarity not found elsewhere.

It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be is a handbook of how to succeed in the world – a pocket ‘bible’ for the talented and timid to make the unthinkable thinkable and the impossible possible.

Advertising guru, Paul Arden, offers up his wisdom on issues as diverse as problem solving, responding to a brief, communicating, playing your cards right, making mistakes and creativity, all notions that can be applied to aspects of modern life. This book provides a unique insight into the world of advertising and is a quirky compilation of quotes, facts, pictures, wit and wisdom, packed into easy-to-digest, bite-sized spreads. If you want to succeed in life or business, this is a must!

A lot of the ideas suggested by Arden can be easily woven into the fabric of our everyday lives if we are willing to make the effort: “You will become whoever you want to be.”

Here are a few axioms from the book:

  • Fail, fail again. Fail better.
  • Your vision of where or who you want to be is the greatest asset you have.
  • Do not seek praise, seek criticism.
  • Do no covet your ideas.
  • Don’t promise what you can’t deliver.

Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite

If you can’t get enough of Paul, I suggest picking up his second book. Arden advocates unconventional thinking, skipping college, taking risks, being outrageous and failing dramatically. Missing is a page in this book emblazoned “Take my advice with a grain of salt,” or “Triumph for an advertising copywriter may be disaster for an accountant.” Nevertheless, Mr. Arden’s books are a pleasure to peruse. His writing is spare, clever, brisk and pointed. Illustrations are clean and witty. Think you whatever, this book is a natty little addition to the business bookshelf.

This is a good one man. You can read it over and over and still learn something new while getting a laugh in between each page. I used to carry it in my back pack every day and read and reread it on the train when I was in the mood. Uh…kinda like a bible. :)
